MISSION

You will report to the Head of Electrical Engineering of the Global Engineering Team, part of the Major Builds Delivery Team in Colt DCS.

You will act as the supporting HV/MV Subject Matter Expert (SME) globally for the Electrical Engineering discipline, providing support and guidance to regional Electrical Engineers and their Regional Engineering Managers, ensuring that our teams will adhere to our standardised design and OFCI equipment procurement strategies and ensuring a Commercial approach in all aspects of the projects including design, engineering and construction.

You will be supporting the Head of Electrical Engineering in tracking the major new technologies (with targeted R&D activities) and new design architectures, identifying, evaluating and implementing the most efficient ones into our GRD and OFCI equipment technical selection to improve speed to market, while reducing costs and the power utilisation effectiveness (PUE) of all new data centres.

The role will require to work with other Design and Engineering functions, Development, Project Management, Procurement and Commercial teams, providing advice and assistance on all matters relating to engineering and design.

You must have the 'outside of the box' thinking mentality when reacting to design and site-specific project issues that hamper the project design or overall programme delivery, working alongside key business stakeholders to ensure we stay customer focussed on all times.

OUTCOMES

The HV/MV SME will support the Head of Electrical Engineering in reviewing the projects globally for consistency and adherence with Colt DCS Employer's Requirements, local and international standards and specific Customers' solutions on multiple projects globally.

The role will require continuous support of our Regional Engineering Managers and their team of Design Managers to ensure business objectives are achieved.

The SME will work within the Global Engineering Team to regularly review and update the Global Reference Design and its regional variations, in coordination with the OFCI equipment selection and strategies, and the continuous inclusion of lessons learnt from live projects and operational facilities, compliance with corporate environmental and sustainable targets and initiatives, validated by the selection of optimal technologies and designs on the most cost effective (TCO) basis available in the market.

The SME will support with:
  • regular independent assessments/audits of the electrical systems integrity of new data centres design and new installations at various stages of the project, including the possible identification of Single Points of Failure or the review of equipment/systems failure RCAs and remediation plans
  • the development and production of reporting systems to monitor the engineering efficiency and cost effectiveness of different electrical systems employed by DCS
  • the review of Scope of Services for our external consultants and contractors/Vendors appointments
  • the preparation of Technical Guidance Notes and Standards
  • engaging with Colt DCS Energy team to define site utility and substation requirement with local utilities, lead technical reviews with utility providers to complete reliability and feasibility studies.
  • interfacing with Colt DCS Procurement team, regional vendors and manufacturers, and global/regional engineering teams to deliver the electrical solutions required for the projects.
  • the Commissioning team to test and validate installation, operation and performance of electrical systems
  • travelling to sites for site review, engineering evaluations, technical support and startup as needed.
  • travelling for "Factory Witness Testing" on equipment and engineering vendor interaction in the design process, as well as final commissioning of the installed systems.
THE TEAM

The Delivery Team, reporting to the VP of Real Estate, is formed by in Regional groups of Project Managers, Design Managers/Engineers, Specialists (namely BMS, Security and Commissioning), Cost Managers and Procurement Managers reporting to the Regional Head of Delivery.

The Design Managers are managed by a Regional Engineering Manager, who will assign a Design Manager and a supporting engineer (of opposite discipline) to each project.

The Design Managers will interface daily with their peers of the Delivery team, but also with the Development Team, who is responsible for site acquisition, power and connectivity searches, authorities' approval, preparation of the project's Design Brief and Business Plan.

The Global Engineering Team, reporting to the Global Director of Design & Construction, is instead responsible and owner of the GRD and technically responsible for the OFCI equipment procurement and vendors management, ensuring at each stage that the projects are compliant with our standardised design.

THE SKILLS / EXPERTISE THEY BRING
  • The ideal candidate should have robust High Voltage Electrical Engineering and Power Systems knowledge, a proven record of HV/MV systems design globally, at different voltage distribution levels and in compliance with different national distribution standards.
  • A strong background in all aspects of MEP mission critical systems, with a focus on Electrical engineering.
  • A thorough understanding of site planning and interdependent disciplines, such as civils, structures and architecture and project delivery processes needed to support our growing fleet of Data Centres, is strongly desired.
  • This person shall be detail-oriented, possess strong organizational skills, and be a self-starter that can excel with little direction.
  • Technical Knowledge:
  • Previous experience of working in a MEP data centre design role within mission critical facilities
  • Excellent knowledge of ETAP, ERACS, CDEGS
  • Working design experience with all the following:
  • Protection Study and Power Flow Analysis
  • Earthing
  • MV Generators and Transformers
  • HV and MV Switch Gear
  • HV Substation Design
  • SCADA
  • Proficient knowledge of Mechanical Engineering principles
  • General knowledge of CSA (Civils, Structural, Architectural) disciplines principles
  • Minimum Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Excellent written and Verbal English skills.
  • Excellent written and Verbal skills on regional languages
  • Ownership:
  • Regularly checks with other areas of the business that they and their team are delivering on their part of any activity, working with them to resolve issues to ensure flawless delivery
  • Regularly reviews spend and identifies opportunities to drive down the cost or improve the return on investment of their personal / team's activities

  • Looks at industry best practice and current trends/innovations for their role and applies these within Colt DCS - sharing what has worked and what has not (and why) with others who hold similar roles within the business. Desirable
  • Proficient in the use of BIM360 and Navis
  • Other European or Asian languages
  • Previous working experience in the UK, Europe and Asia-Pacific environment particularly Japan and India.
