Role description:

We are recruiting for a Planning Manager to join our Rail Consultancy business. You'll be working on projects such as HS2, the Trans-Pennine Route Upgrade & Network Rail just to name a few!

We are flexible on location, with a mixture of client site, office & home working (what ever works for you really!)

Role accountabilities:

Lead functional input to projects, including where relevant leading the input of other planners and, where appropriate, subcontractors, to ensure delivery is consistent and effective, meeting scope, time, cost and quality requirements.
Plan and prioritise own work and that of more junior staff so that parallel activities are all completed in a timely manner.
Generate and check planning estimates and execution strategies to provide optimal solutions and eliminate errors.
Contribute to the planning strategy for assigned projects, so that the approach taken in each case is effective and appropriate to the project needs and client requirements.
Set up the baseline plan for assigned projects and monitor progress against this plan, so that any problems are recognised promptly.
Report on progress and earned value, to support financial forecasting and any necessary corrective action.
Proactively identify and highlight any progress issues which threaten successful delivery of the project, so that recovery action may be taken.
Lead planning input to estimating and tendering activity on assigned projects, so that all relevant issues, actions and risks are understood and taken into account.
Establish and maintain technical standards to support quality planning delivery.
Provide functional support and guidance to more junior staff to develop both them as individuals and the capability of the team as a whole.
Proactively generate value adding options within projects to offer to clients to improve both the chance of winning work and satisfaction with completed and ongoing work.
Keep abreast of current technology and methodology so that planning input to projects takes account of new developments.
Support the planning department manager in non project based activities such as writing procedures, resource planning, establishing policy, budgeting, recruitment etc, to support the drive to continuously improve and optimise the operation of the department.
To provide planning services on assigned projects, and where required, lead a team or teams of more junior planners in the delivery of planning to time, cost and quality.

Qualifications & Experience:

Significant relevant experience in project planning.
Rail sector experience
Minimum HNC / HND
Team leadership capability.
Conversant with planning software and tools.
Competent project management skills.
Capable of managing own work and that of others.
Commercial awareness.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work in a team environment.
Experience in contracting environment and contracting styles.
Appreciation of Cost Engineering.
