Job Introduction

BBC Radio 6 Music is a radio station for music lovers with a curious spirit. We shine a light, lend an ear and give platform to music beyond the mainstream. We are a highly distinctive network, playing and celebrating a breadth of artists and music across eras and genres.

6 Music is seeking to grow its audience, profile and reach of the network amongst the 25-44 age group.

We are looking for a Social Media Manager who shares our love of the network to join a creative team using short form video to help audiences discover live and on demand radio, music performances, and podcasts.

This role sits in the BBC Radio & Music central social media team that runs accounts, commissions video, visualises radio moments, and edits and optimises content for channels that reach millions every week.

Main Responsibilities
  • Work with the Senior Social Lead and the 6 Music Network Team to devise and deliver a strategy that creates impact with 6 Music's target audiences.
  • Plan, schedule and curate the 6 Music social channels on Instagram and TikTok - crafting highly creative campaigns that drive listening on BBC Sounds.
  • Daily collaboration with colleagues within 6 Music, our wider Social Media Team and other BBC divisions.
  • Work with our presenters, production teams and artists to create relatable, authentic and engaging video formats that bring our audio output to life.
  • React to relevant music news stories - offering a journalistic approach and delving into the BBC's rich archive where appropriate.
  • Manage social media deliverables from a range of suppliers from both inside and outside the BBC.
  • Manage freelancer and agency support for key projects.
  • Lead the social media offer for our key events across the year - including our flagship 6 Music Festival.
  • Ensure that content is syndicated across non owned channels (artist accounts, labels, venues, other BBC accounts) to maximise our reach.
  • Ensure output adheres to compliance and Ofcom policies and that our teams and suppliers understand their responsibilities.
This role is focussed on 6 Music, but there will also be opportunities to work on our other music networks, podcast launches and big music events such as Glastonbury, Radio 1's Big Weekend, and Radio 2 in the Park.

Are you the right candidate?

You will need to demonstrate the following:
  • A deep understanding of the 6 Music brand and our schedule, as well as a passion for music beyond the mainstream - spanning a range of eras and genres.
  • A clear and distinct vision for where 6 Music can sit in the social media space to attract new audiences and build fandom for our presenters, shows, and music - factoring in the market of other radio stations, streaming platforms, and music publications.
  • A passion for engaging with new and diverse audiences to help them discover new music.
  • A thorough knowledge of how social video and streaming platforms work, and how users discover music and audio in these spaces.
  • A solid understanding of the music industry within the UK - key venues, publications, labels, emerging acts, trends, and grassroots initiatives.
  • A track record of creating campaigns that engage a range of audiences. We will ask you to share links and examples as part of your application.
  • Substantial experience of working as a Social Media Manager or equivalent in a similar environment.
  • Strong quality video and image editing skills - must be able to work within the Adobe Creative Suite, and be able to devise or commission engaging formats for platforms such as TikTok or Instagram Reels or YouTube Shorts.
  • Familiarity with social media analytics and a skill for translating insights into content decisions.
  • Strong interpersonal and decision-making skills, coupled with the ability to establish credibility and maintain effective working relationships with senior contacts both internal and external to the BBC.
